Several Indiana Ice players have caught the eyes of NHL scouts as forward Jason Salvaggio and defenseman Rinat Valiev were both named on the NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings for the 2013 NHL Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Salvaggio topped all current Icemen on the list, cracking the top 100 in the North American skaters list. In 17 contests with in Indy, the UConn commit registered 11 points (5G, 6A) after finishing his prep school career with the Selects Hockey Academy Program at South Kent (CT). He began his junior hockey career with an impressive five-point performance (2G, 3A) through three games in late December.
Valiev, coming in at the 142nd spot for North American skaters, finished his first USHL campaign first among team defenseman in goals (6) and fourth in points (13) through 36 games. He was also selected to represent his native Russia in the Five Nations Tournement in Jonkoping, Sweden.
Other players listed with Ice ties include alumni Adam Erne (10-11) and Justin Bailey (11-12) as well as affiliate forward Adam Johnson.
Erne (ranked 26th) was the USHL’s youngest player at 15 years old when he skated for the Ice in 2010-11 while Justin Bailey (ranked 38th) registered a goal in only his second shift during the 2011-12 season. Affiliate forward Adam Johnson (ranked 176th) appeared in six contests this season, recording a pair of assists.
The 2013 NHL Draft will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on June 30, 2013. 24 Icemen have been selected in the draft, including Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson with the 27th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario. Former icemen Cristoval Nieves (NY Rangers), Jon Gillies (Calgary) and Robbie Baillargeon (Ottawa) heard their names called during the 2012 NHL Draft last summer.
