INDIANAPOLIS – A 6’2”, 185 lb., left-handed shooting forward and native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, former Michigan State Spartan Dean Chelios, the son of NHL Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios, agreed to terms with the Indy Fuel for the 2014-15 ECHL season, the team announced Monday. Chelios, 25, will embark on his first full ECHL campaign in 2014-15 despite appearing in eight games with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye at the end of the 2013-14 season following the conclusion of his collegiate career.
“Dean is a passionate and competitive player that is willing to earn his position in professional hockey,” said Fuel Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman on Monday. “We believe players with heart and drive like Dean’s will make us a difficult team to play against in our inaugural season.”
In four seasons at Michigan State, Chelios tallied 22 career goals, 53 total points and 80 combined penalty minutes in 139 games played from 2009 to 2014 in CCHA and Big Ten Conference play. Prior to his time with the Spartans, Chelios spent three seasons in the junior ranks with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Chicago Steel from 2007 to 2009. In his final junior campaign, Chelios scored at a better-than point-per-game pace in 49 appearances for the 2008-09 Steel, notching 19 goals and 53 points, along with 29 penalty minutes and a +5 rating.
“I’m really pumped to join the Fuel,” said Chelios on Monday. “I’m excited to seize the opportunity I have in Indy and help make the team as competitive as possible next year.” As for his playing style, Chelios says he brings more to the table than just offense. “I definitely consider myself an offensive-minded player,” said Chelios, “But at the same time, I finish my hits and look to provide a lot of excitement in my approach.”
Chelios’ father Chris, a three-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s best defenseman (1988-89, 1992-93 and 1995-96), three-time Stanley Cup Champion (1986 with Montreal, 2002 and 2008 with Detroit) and 11-time NHL All-Star, played 26 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadians (1983-90), Detroit Red Wings (1998-2009) and the Fuel’s NHL affiliate, the Chicago Blackhawks (1990-99) before concluding his playing career with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2010 as the NHL’s all-time leader in games played by a defenseman (1,651). A Chicago native, Chelios was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.
