The Avon Orioles started slowly out of the gates last Friday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in the season opener against Lawrence Central.
Avon trailed by 16 points midway through the third quarter against the Bears but finally managed to bring it all together in a furious late 3rd quarter rally.
Avon took their first lead of the game in the 4th quarter and had to rally once again when Lawrence Central retook the lead midway through the quarter. Oriole junior quarterback Brandon Peters led Avon on a late drive and scored the game winning touch down from 1 yard out with less than a minute to play in the game to lead Avon to a season opening 38-31 victory.
Peters finished the game completing 13 of 19 passes for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for a third. Senior running back Derrick Tennant ran for 191 yards and scored twice.
The Oriole defense allowed only 8 points in the second half led by linebackers Matt Thompson and Zach Williams.
Avon will face another huge test tonight when the 10th ranked Orioles host 6A – #2 Ben Davis in the Orioles home opener.
The Giants are coming off a blowout victory over 5A – #1 Cathedral last week 44-19. Senior quarterback Kyle Castner threw for a school record 350 yards on 28 of 43 passing and 2 touchdowns. Castner also ran for a touchdown against the Fighting Irish. Senior running back Dorian Tate rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns while senior wide receiver Trew Smith caught 9 passes for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Ben Davis’ defense is led by Michigan and Notre Dame recruit, senior linebacker Asmar Bilal who recorded 14 tackles and 2 sacks against Cathedral.
