Ohio State and Notre Dame announced that they will play a home and home series in football beginning in 2022.
The Buckeyes & Fighting Irish will play in Columbus on Sept. 3, 2022 and in South Bend on Sept. 23, 2023.
While fans of both schools may be excited about the announcement, that is still 8 years out. A lot could change in the fortunes of either team by the time this series is played. Non-conference games have to be scheduled 5-10 years in advance. Especially those games that involve the Fighting Irish.
Ohio State is 3-2 against Notre Dame but the two losses were in 1935 and 1936. The three wins were all impressive showings by the Buckeyes including a 34-20 drubbing in the Fiesta Bowl in 2005. Ohio State and Notre Dame played a home and home back in 1995 and 1996 which the Buckeyes won both games.
It’s still a marquee matchup and the game in 2022 will be the opener of the season for both schools. You can bet that the Ohio Stadium attendance record will be broken that night. Yes, you know it will be a prime time night game. Especially since Ohio State finally installed permanent light stands for this season.
It will be “must see” TV that night. I just wish I had a crystal ball to see where the programs will be in 8 years.
