It’s been a long week for the 15th ranked Avon Orioles. Not only did they lose to rival Brownsburg last week 27-7, but Avon lost one of their defensive stalwarts, linebacker Zach Williams, to a season ending ACL injury. The third Oriole to go down with an ACL injury this season.
After taking an early lead against the Bulldogs on an 8 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brandon Peters to junior Andrew Griffin, the Orioles would be stymied the rest of the night after Brownsburg tied the game on the following drive. The second half began with the score tied 7-7 but the Brownsburg offense and defense would prove to be too much for the Orioles in the second half scoring 10 points in each of the 3rd and 4th quarters while shutting out Avon the rest of the way. Peters finished the game 13 of 32 for 117 yards and was intercepted twice to go along with his one touchdown pass to Griffin. Junior running back Darian Love finished with 135 yards rushing on 23 carries.
The Whiteland Warriors enter the contest ranked 12th in Class 5A. The Warriors are coming off a 41-31 victory over rival Franklin last week in “The Golden Work Boot” game. Their 11th victory in a row in their annual rivalry game with the Grizzly Cubs. Whiteland’s Isaiah Calaway ran the opening kickoff 90 yards to the house to open the game followed by a Matthias Ebeyer interception return for a touchdown. The Warriors and Grizzly Cubs slugged it out the whole game long. Whiteland’s offense came primarily through their rushing attack with senior Brandon Benson rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown. Junior Brandon Patterson rushed for 94 yards including a 41 yard touchdown run and junior Chris Richardson rushed for 54 yards including a 24 yard rushing touchdown. Calaway added a 19 yard TD reception from sophomore quarterback Jace Carpenter in addition to his kickoff return score.
Tonight’s game marks the first time these two schools have met on the gridiron since 1998 when the Orioles prevailed 23-0 with Avon owning an 11-2 record against Whiteland.
