The race for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship became a bit more crowded last week after the Avon Orioles knocked off conference leading Fishers 36-26. The victory also gave the Orioles control of their own destiny for the prestigious HCC title as Avon joined three other conference rivals with only one loss in conference play.

The Orioles took advantage of a strong second quarter against the Tigers to break open a 7-7 tie to lead 29-14 at the half. Junior quarterback Brandon Peter threw for 203 yards and four touchdowns for Avon and ran for 80 more. Peters, junior running back Darian Love and senior running back Derrick Tennant combined for 195 yards rushing with Tennant adding a score. Junior wide receiver Andrew Griffin caught seven passes for 131 yards and a pair of scores. Gabe Lakstins and Matt Moore also caught touchdown passes from Peters.

The Shamrocks are the current Class 5A state runners-up. Westfield is coming off of a big road win against Brownsburg last week as the Shamrocks defeated the Bulldogs 35-21 to spoil Brownsburg’s Homecoming festivities. Senior running back Elvin Caldwell rushed for 186 yards and 3 scores while junior quarterback Ryan Pepiot threw for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The winner of tonight’s game remains in the hunt for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship while the loser will find themselves looking for help if they have any aspirations for a conference title.

It’s the 9th ranked in Class 6A Avon Orioles taking on the 7th ranked team in Class 5A Westfield Shamrocks and you can watch all the action on Audio Sports Online.
