ANCHORAGE, AK – In the first of a two-game preseason series, the Indy Fuel defeated the defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces 3-1 on Tuesday at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. With the win in their first game in franchise history, the Fuel improved to 1-0-0-0 in the 2014 ECHL preseason with two games remaining on their exhibition schedule prior to the team’s October 17th regular season opener.
The Fuel strung together a number of quality scoring chances in the first period, outshooting the Aces 15-6 as both teams finished the frame 0/1 on the power-play.
Sensing an opportunity, the Fuel broke the ice at 3:40 of the middle frame when Zach Sternberg started a rush up the left side of the neutral zone and Taylor Law wired a transition extra-man slapper past Alaska netminder Aaron Crandall for a 1-0 Fuel lead. Late in the middle stanza, Fuel winger Rhett Bly took advantage of a strong, up-the-gut Kenton Miller rush and poked home a rebound tapper at 17:30 to extend the Fuel advantage to 2-0.
The Fuel kept their foot on the gas in the third, as Johnny McGuire extended the Indy lead on a fortuitous bounce from a sharp angle at 9:40 to make it 3-1 Indy. A late Alaska goal notwithstanding, Fuel goaltender Sean Bonar was impressive in victory on Tuesday, stopping 25 of the 26 Aces shots he faced en route to his first victory as a professional.
Next up for the Fuel, it’s a Wednesday rematch with the Aces, live from Sullivan Arena in Anchorage at 11:15 pm EST. Full coverage of Wednesday’s game begins with the Jose Cuervo Pregame Show at 11:00 pm on the Fuel’s flagship station, CBS Sports 1430 with Fuel broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
