Sectional pairings for the IHSAA football tournament will be announced this weekend but the Avon Orioles are still focused on a Hoosier Crossroads Conference crown when they welcome the Zionsville Eagles to Hendricks Regional Health Stadium tonight on Senior Night.

The Orioles are tied with Fishers atop the conference standings with two games remaining in the regular season. Last week, four teams had conference championship aspirations. This week, only Avon and Fishers control their own destinies. The Orioles knocked off one of the teams that were vying for the title last week defeating Westfield on the road 23-6.

Avon took advantage of a couple of first quarter turnovers by the Shamrocks and raced out to an early 16-0 lead on a cold, windy and rainy night. Senior running back Derrick Tennant scored all three of the Orioles touchdowns. Two of those game on the ground as Tennant rushed for 177 yards on 34 carries. The third came on a touchdown pass from Brandon Peters who threw for 107 yards. Avon’s defense forced a pair of Shamrock turnovers that led to 13 points.

Zionsville picked up their first conference win for first year coach Pat Echeverria, who took over for long time Eagles head coach Larry McWhorter this season, when the Eagles beat Brownsburg last week 16-3. The Eagles senior running pack Matt Penola rushed for 103 yards on 17 carries for Zionsville. Junior quarterback Drew Bertram threw for 100 yards on 10 of 21 passing and 1 touchdown. Bertram also ran for another score.
