The Class 6A – Sectional 5 championship is on the line tonight as the Avon Orioles look to capture their first sectional title since 2010 when they welcome back the Ben Davis Giants to Hendricks Regional Health Stadium at Avon High School tonight.

The Orioles lost two games all season. They avenged one of those losses last week when Avon defeated Brownsburg 41-10 to advance to the championship game. Avon senior running back Derrick Tennant ran for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns in wearing down Brownsburg’s defense while junior quarterback Brandon Peters threw for 181 yards on a very efficient 14 for 20 night. Peters threw four touchdown passes, three of them to junior wide receiver Andrew Griffin.

Now the Orioles are hoping to avenge their only other loss this season when the fourth ranked Ben Davis Giants return to Avon.

The Giants beat Avon 57-27 back in week two of the season. Giants senior quarterback Kyle Castner threw for 310 yards and four touchdown while senior running back Dorian Tate racked up 177 rushing yards and three scores of his own in the win. Castner’s touchdown passes were spread among four different Giants receivers with senior Brennan Gillis hauling in five balls for 117 yards for Ben Davis.

Not to be outdone, Peters through for 320 yards with 80 of those coming on his lone touchdown pass of the night to Gabe Lakstins. Junior running back Darian Love led the Orioles with 75 yards rushing on 8 carries and two touchdowns.

The Giants advanced to the championship game after defeating the Pike Red Devils last Friday 49-38. The Giants trailed 24-20 at the half before outscoring the Red Devils 29-14 in the second half. Castner threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns along with one interception. The Giants relied heavily on Tate’s rushing attack as the senior carried the ball 43 times for 259 yards to go with three touchdowns.

The Orioles and Giants will battle for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the regional. The winner will face the winner of Warren Central and Lawrence Central.

Join me and the Indiana Football Hall-of-Famer Dave Shelbourne tonight for Avon Oriole football on Audio Sports Online. The pregame show will begin at 6:45 PM followed by the kickoff between the Orioles and Giants at 7:00 PM.
