Ask any high school coach and they will tell you there are two goals that they set for their team every season. The first is to win your conference’s title and the second is to win a state title.
The Brownsburg Bulldogs begin their quest to achieve goal number one tonight when the Bulldogs tipoff Hoosier Crossroads Conference action on the road against long time rival Avon.
The Bulldogs have not won a Hoosier Crossroads Conference basketball championship since 2004. Even during the magical 2007-2008 season, the Bulldogs finished second in the HCC at 8-1 with their lone conference loss coming to eventual conference champion Lafayette Jefferson. Brownsburg came close to winning the HCC crown last season but came up short losing to eventual champion Hamilton Southeastern 62-40. One of only three losses the Bulldogs suffered all season.
With the three Tippecanoe county schools no longer a part of the HCC, each conference game now has added importance. Instead of playing a nine game conference schedule, each school now only plays six games against conference foes.
Brownsburg begins conference play with a record of 4-1 after a decisive drubbing of Lebanon in their last contest. The Bulldogs led 31-17 at the half and outscored the Tigers 31-9 in the second half limiting Lebanon to only one field goal in the half. K.J. Walton led the Bulldogs with 17 points while Landon Hall had his best scoring night of the season with 15 points including 3 three-pointers. The Bulldogs had good contributions all around as Michael Fowlkes, Tyler Kirtz and Jimmy Simms each had 7 points. Adrian Chapman had 10 rebounds with 6 of those coming off the offensive glass. Dalton Vachon had 4 points and 4 boards but was instrumental in providing good defense down in the low post.
The Avon Orioles enter tonight’s contest with a record of 2-2 but are already one up in the conference standings with an impressive 64-60 win over perennial power Hamilton Southeastern. But the Orioles have dropped their last two games albeit against a pair of high caliber teams. The Orioles lost to then 4A – #1 Carmel 57-34 and fell to an undefeated Terre Haute South squad 79-76 in their last contest. The Orioles were led by multi-sport star Brandon Peters 35 points in the losing effort against the Braves. Peters is also the Orioles leading scorer this season averaging nearly 23 points per game.
Tonight’s game should showcase an excellent matchup between two of the conference’s best players in the Orioles Peters and the Bulldogs Walton. Walton leads Brownsburg averaging over 25 points per game and almost 8 rebounds per game.
