Only seven games remain in the regular season for the Brownsburg Bulldogs as they make their stretch run toward sectional play. After a disappointing loss at home two weeks ago against Hoosier Crossroads Conference rival Fishers, the Bulldogs won back-to-back contests last week. First, knocking off conference opponent Westfield Friday night 58-43 and then upsetting 4A-#4 Carmel last Saturday 36-33 in a venue that few teams leave with a victory. At Carmel.
Brownsburg outscored the Greyhounds 16-9 in the first quarter as head coach Steve Lynch’s squad kept the Greyhounds from scoring in double figures in any quarter. Carmel’s defense held Brownsburg to only three third quarter points to trail the Bulldogs by a single point at 27-26 after three quarters and led the Bulldogs 33-32 with 6 seconds remaining in the game. Brownsburg senior K.J. Walton was fouled under the Bulldogs basket and sank two free throws that proved to be the difference. Tyler Kirtz’s two free throws after a Greyhound turnover gave Brownsburg some cushion as Carmel’s last chance opportunity ended with the Greyhounds turning the ball over on a desperation heave. Walton scored 21 of the Bulldogs 36 points including three 3 point baskets. Senior guard Darrian Ringo scored 7 points in the win. The Bulldogs also helped themselves at the free throw line converting on 12 of 16 attempts while Carmel only made five trips to the line converting on three. Brownsburg also took care of the basketball all night long committing only three turnovers to the Greyhounds 10.
Now the Bulldogs will try to maintain their momentum into tonight’s matchup as they return to the Varsity Fieldhouse to host the Zionsville Eagles.
The Eagles enter tonight’s game with an identical 13-4 record. But Zionsville remains perfect in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play at 3-0 as they remain atop the conference standings with the Fishers Tigers who are 4-0. While Zionsville enters the game unranked, the Eagles are also coming off an upset win of their own Tuesday night when they knocked off 4A-#7 Pike 61-58 in overtime. The Eagles had three players score in double figures with senior Jake Mann leading the way with 18 points and a perfect 8 for 8 from the foul line. Senior Derrick Smits scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds and senior Braden Hall finished with 12 points. The win was Zionsville’s sixth consecutive victory.
Walton leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season (21.8 ppg) while Smits leads the Eagles in points (over 16 ppg), rebounds (almost 6 rpg) and blocks (3 bpg).
