Tribe’s Hanson named IL Player of the Month for May

The International League announced that Indianapolis Indians second baseman Alen Hanson has been named the league’s Player of the Month for May. Hanson will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition for his standout performance last month.

Hanson, 22, hit .362 with eight doubles, five triples, three home runs, 18 RBIs and 22 runs scored to help lead the Tribe to the best record in the International League and second-best mark in all of Triple-A Baseball at 18-11. The top prospect led the league in batting average, total hits (42), extra-base hits, total bases (69), runs and slugging percentage (.595), and his .362 average was 12 points better than any batter in the IL.

The Triple-A rookie also concluded just his second month of action with the Tribe having hit safely in 23 of his 28 games and reaching base safely in 25 of those 28 contests. He totaled 15 multi-hit efforts, including five straight from May 17-22, and capped the month with a seven-game hitting streak from May 25-31. Overall this season, Hanson is hitting .311 with 17 extra-base hits, 30 runs scored and 25 RBIs. The native of the Dominican Republic currently leads the IL with 89 total bases and ranks second in hits (60) and runs scored.

Hanson’s honor comes exactly a decade since the last member of the Indianapolis Indians claimed an IL Player of the Month Award, when pitcher Zach Duke took home the honors for May 2005.
